The Shar-Pei is a distinctive and ancient breed from China, famous for its deeply wrinkled skin, broad muzzle, and loyal temperament. Originally bred as a guard dog, hunter, and farm companion, the Shar-Pei is now primarily a devoted family dog known for its dignity and independence.

 

Appearance

  • Size: Medium (typically 40–60 lbs).
  • Height: About 18–20 inches at the shoulder.
  • Coat: Short, bristly coat that can be “horse coat” (very short), “brush coat” (slightly longer), or “bear coat” (rare and longer).
  • Colors: Solid colors such as fawn, red, cream, black, blue, chocolate, or lilac.
  • Distinctive Features: Wrinkled skin, especially as puppies; broad, “hippopotamus” muzzle; small, high-set ears; and a tail curled over the back.
